Quand la tempête se lève sur le lac Saint-Jean

Friday night was our first in winter camping night on Lake Saint-Jean. It was pretty cold. Despite everything, our equipment allows us to remain quite comfortable: sleeping bags for temperatures of -30, hot-water bottles between the legs to keep us warm. We slip into our “sleeping bag” and we were ready for the night.

All wrapped up in our sleeping bags and under our tents, we slept until morning. Leaving our covers, we must quickly put on our warm clothes and our down-filled jackets, get moving and find a little warmth. We each picked up our equipment to load our sleds. It wasn’t the easiest morning, let’s say. It only took a few minutes to have the toes and fingertips frozen. In all cases, it was necessary to get moving fast in the direction of the next camp. Volunteers were there to help with all sorts of “problems” caused by the cold weather.

Around 10 a.m., we left the camp, skis and snowshoes on our feet (frozen for most!) for our day’s expedition. Let’s mention that the first kilometres were quite difficult for everyone. Frozen feet and fingers, we were trying to warm up. Towards lunchtime, the wind calmed down. No more wind at all. Already, at that time, life seemed easier. We took the time to eat, before continuing our way to our camp. We covered the last few kilometres with a bright sun warming up our faces. It was fortunate for us that the weather changed a bit during the day, which turned out to be a very good one!

We ended our adventure in the sunset. It was incredibly beautiful! Smiles were on everyone’s faces. On one side, we had the sunset and on the other, the rise of the full moon. We were greeted, once again, by our charming volunteers. Broth, hot water and appetizers were awaiting us.

For the evening, a comforting supper and “testimony” sharing period with the two Mario. I can’t wait experience this!
