Part of being on an adventure is facing the unknown. And sometimes, the unknown comes with wind, rain, cold… Yes, this morning, the sky had other plans for us. We had to adjust and find a new way forward.
While Eve-Marie took the scenic route to tell us about how the plans had changed (a little context, a little more context, a gentle detour, a kind reminder), Joé cut to the chase with a short and sweet «Ok, go». We all laughed. It was a call for action, and an action day it was.
So we went. We paddled into the mist, the lake quiet and grey around us. “This is what we need, and everything else is just perks.”, someone said.
On the shore, the Café de la Pointe was waiting for us with delicious hot food and hot drinks, and a firepit. Some found the most amazing mushrooms I have ever seen.
Then the wind came strong and the waves grew, rocking that boat. And the rabaska became a karaoke party. From Justin Bieber to Bad Bunny, we sang and laughed. Soon, the waves stopped being a problem and became a rhythm.
After the boat I heard (once again) a deep suspiro. The sigh of someone surprised by life, by the world, by his own body doing things he didn’t remember it could still do.
At camp, tents went up in the cold, and around the fire the words shared felt deeper. I looked around the circle. The calm and sensitive soul, quite like a lake, with a whole current moving underneath. The one with the noble heart and the perfect comeback, a child and old soul at once. The one who sparkles, who notices little things and says thank you to life out loud. The problem solver, who takes life by the horns courageously and who is a chef at heart. The one who seems to know a little bit of everything, and does it all with quiet confidence, except eating brownie with raspberry sauce. Our peppy walking jukebox, who sings with perfect pitch and with a mischievous smile. The girl with fire eyes, who sat near me, carrying so many stories, dark and beautiful at once, with this sweet amazing laugh and light. The one with the deep suspiros, who drops random Spanish talking and facts when you least expect it (Today’s gem: “Alberta doesn’t have provincial sales tax. Alberta has Nickelback”.)
The sun got a zero points today. We missed him. But I don’t think anyone around that fire was cold inside.
Today, we didn’t need perfect weather to feel happy. We just needed each other, and someone brave enough to say: let’s go.
Tomorrow, whatever the sky decides, we already know the answer.
Ok go.
