Diagnosis

I was diagnosed with ALL: Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia which is a type of blood cancer. It is more common in newborns and toddlers but I was diagnosed when I was 11. I was in remission at the time of the expedition, but with the amazing people that came along I would have no doubt they would make someone in treatment feel just as empowered as I was!

Why did you choose to take part in an expedition with the foundation?

I wanted to feel like a regular teenager. Even if it was only for a week! I’ve always loved the outdoors and when I got diagnosed, that really put a damper on what I was able to do.

What were you fears or doubts before you jumped into the adventure?

I was scared to travel alone. I had never even thought about that until I was chosen to be part of this amazing expedition! I was also unsure I would be able to keep up with everyone but everyone else was just like me!

What memories and benefits did you bring back home?

I learned that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to! I remember our first day hiking they said we were going to hike 23km. 23km?! I had never done anything like that before. But before I knew it, we were setting up camp for the night and I couldn’t wait for the next day!
