Expeditions

Diagnosis

Thyroid Cancer (papillary)

Why did you choose to take part in an expedition with the foundation?

I chose to take part in an expedition because I needed to challenge myself after cancer treatment to realize that I am still able to be young and do normal things.

What were you fears or doubts before you jumped into the adventure?

I was terrified before the expedition – I almost got off the bus and went back home before even meeting up with a staff member!
I was afraid that no one would accept me and I wouldn’t get along with anyone.
I was also very afraid that my cancer and treatment wouldn’t have been viewed as ‘severe enough’ to fit into the group.

What memories and benefits did you bring back home?

It is so hard to put all the benefits into words; the best I can come up with is the expedition allowed me to realize that I can accomplish so much more than I expected even after cancer. Life goes on and that I can definitely push myself again and I won’t break.
Something that I will also remember is how a staff member explained life in terms of a river – sometimes the river is straight and has no obstacles, other times it will have smaller rapids and sometimes huge rocks, but the water always keeps flowing, and just like me with life – no matter the obstacle, there is always a way forward, some obstacles will be bigger than others, but the water will always flow.
