Expédition hiver 2017 - Jour 5

This morning, we woke up and there was a good foot and a half of snow that had fallen and gusty winds filling with snow all possible cavities, penetrating through all the cracks—there was snow even in the toilet paper roll. We therefore got up with the motivation of early birds with a big day ahead … and then, the first who looked outside decided to reassess the situation.

The path to get to the outhouse was completely filled with snow, we had it up to our thighs, windows and doors were significantly blocked by snow and the dogs, all rolled up and covered with snow, were so sweet. It was quite a storm; since all schools in Quebec were closed, we decided to stay in the warmness of the cabin, it was much safer for us and for the dogs anyway.

However, the temperature was rather mild and so, aside from the wind and reduced visibility, it was decided that after we would experiencethe storm’s effects afterlunch. We started to go take care of the dogs; even if they don’t run, they need to eat. Then, we walked a bit in the powdery snow to be convinced of having made the right decision by not leaving, and finally we played team games.

At one point, André, the great leader of the dog pack, joined us with 9 of his dogs that were running free. They obeyed on command and were particularly happy to play in the snow sofreely… Young people did as well, as it was for some a first snowstorm experience, and what a storm!

We came in and had lunch; we had free time in the afternoon. Some took the opportunity to rest a little, others to chat and several began to build a tunnel circuit in the snow which could make prairie dogsjealous! We ended the day sipping hot chocolate, playing cards, but mostly laughing together a lot. Theday went by without us noticing it.

Our guides had prepared “quesadillas” and excellent chili, and the snow has finally stopped falling while we were having supper after more than 24 hours of large flakes falling. The evening therefore ends on the same note as the day before, one must go to bed early tonight because tomorrow, with all the snow that has fallen, it will be a difficult and long day for us and the dogs.

And what about you? You also experienced the storm? Good night! See you tomorrow!
