30 years of horizon

Hi, I am Hari Sekar and I am a 20 year old Brain Cancer Survivor. I was diagnosed with Pinealblastoma on the last day of grade nine few months before my 15th birthday. After my brain surgery, I was in a coma for a month and when I woke up I was fully paralyzed and unable to speak. I had lost all my balance and mobility. After a while I started moving in my wheelchair and slowly started progressing physically but school was a struggle but I did not give up. I would eventually attend the Stollery hospital school when I felt like walking to the school with my walker.

As the years went on I slowly started walking with a cane. This year I can walk pretty safely without a cane but still need support when walking up stairs. I am graduating from high school and going to NAIT college this fall!

When I found out about On the Tip of the Toes cancer foundation through a fellow cancer survivor I was ecstatic! On the Tip of the Toes cancer foundation organizes therapeutic and adventurous expeditions for young people in-treatment or post-treatment for cancer. I have never travelled outside of Edmonton on my own and was somewhat nervous. Marie-Michelle Paradis, the program manager instinctively knew that and comforted me. She helped me through every step of the way to Montreal. Going on this trip was the highlight of my year! Being alongside other cancer patients was a big help with boosting my confidence and showing that I am not alone in my fight against cancer.

Being in complete wilderness was truly breath taking and felt like a once in a lifetime experience! More importantly, these cost free expeditions strive to I personally want anyone that went through similar struggles as me to be able to go on one of these trips without having to worry about the cost of the trip.
