This expedition will offer 14 teenagers aged 14-18 years old in remission of cancer for 5 years or less, the opportunity to discover some amazing areas from the Canadian Rockies along with other young people living similar situations.

After a flight to Calgary, we’ll be spending our two first days at the Alpine Club of Canada Clubhouse in Canmore. We’ll get to know each other and familiarize ourselves with the equipment. Our guides will initiate us into rock climbing, and we’ll test our backpacks during a short hike into the surrounding paths.

Then, we’ll be flying by helicopter to the Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Colombia. The next three days, we’ll begin our exploration of the Rockies from our basecamp. Each day, we’ll be discovering a new sector of the park hiking with light backpacks. We’ll discover breathtaking summits, of which the famous Mount Assiniboine. Glaciers, steep cliffs, snowy peaks and wild flowers will be part of the scenery. If we’re lucky, we might even get the chance to observe local fauna, such as mountain goats, mouflons and wapitis.

On the 7th day, we’ll fill in our backpacks and leave for a four-day autonomous trek. We’ll make a quick incursion into Banff National Park.

Far beyond the distances we’ll be trekking, this expedition is a group experience out of the ordinary. To reach our destinations and enjoy a rich and positive experience, we’ll be forming a small community where everyone’s input will be of significant importance.

Expedition Members

The foundation’s team will include two facilitators, one photographer-blogger, as well as medical volunteers (a physician, a nurse, and a psychosocial professional), who’s mission is to keep an eye on everyone’s wellness during the expedition. Looking after the logistical aspects, we’ll bank on the presence of a professional hiking guides’ team. Exceptionally, we’ll also welcome a documentary film crew.

Geography and History

Travelling across the Rockies is exploring a territory inhabited by the First Nations for more than ten thousand years. Long before the arrival of the Europeans, Peigan, Assiniboine, Blackfeet and Kootenai Nations crossed this imposing natural barrier to meet each other and proceed to exchanges. These first explorers developed a very strong attachment to their environment which was a source of food, but also the inspiration for a rich spiritual culture.

Nowadays, the Canadian Rocky mountain parks are part of UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage List. On top of its fascinating geological composition, it forms a remarkable mountainous landscape. Assiniboine Provincial Park is still accessible only by foot or by helicopter. Thus, it’s going to be a real privilege to be able to admire it exceptional natural beauty.
